While many students may think finals are stressful, others find them challenging, and some welcome them as a chance to boost their final grade.

Sophomore Bryant Wilkinson is an education major, and most of his five finals are tests. “I personally don’t like finals whatsoever just because I don’t believe a course test evaluates your entire knowledge to the fullest,” Wilkinson said.

Wilkinson is on the men’s wrestling team at Bellarmine, and the team practices Monday through Friday, but those practices don’t interfere too much with his studying.

“We have practices in the morning and afternoon, so it cuts out a couple of hours of what could be studying time,” Wilkinson said.

Senior Gabby Mora is majoring in biology with a minor in biochemistry. She said she doesn’t mind finals and considers them an opportunity to showcase everything she’s learned over the semester.

“If you’re struggling in a class, it’s a good way to have an opportunity to boost your grade because most times finals count for a lot more than your typical test or participation grade for that matter,” Mora said.

Mora’s five finals consist of tests, papers and presentations.

“I would prefer to have a presentation or paper any day over a test, so that way I can prepare at my own pace and kind of put my words out there rather than just having a set answer choice and having to pick one,” Mora said.

Junior Charlie Kirk is a communication major with a minor in digital media. Kirk said most of his finals are papers and having multiple papers due in the same week gets overwhelming. He said the finals were assigned with a month’s notice.

“With most classes, you’ll have a final project then your final exam or paper, so that all kind of slams together when you could’ve been working on these assignments all semester to have them all due in the same week,” Kirk said. “It adds a lot of stress that I feel could be avoided.”

Kirk said he isn’t a fan of finals and wishes they could be more organized.

“I think there’s a better way to get all the examination done where it’s better for the students and where it’s not so much work for the faculty,” Kirk said.
