Sprint footballs succeeds in its inaugural season

By Alyssa Brock

Sprint football wrapped up the first season with a winning record of 4-3 but lost players throughout the season.

Harold Davis, head sprint football coach, said, “We started out undefeated and lost some players due to personal issues, financial situations and injuries, so we suffered the last half of the season.”

The team started the season with 36 players on the roster but finished with only 23. The team began 3-0 but was 1-3 in the final four games.

Some team members said they enjoyed this new experience despite the challenges.

Ben Valle, a first-year and kicker, said, “It’s my first year at Bellarmine and playing college football, and I think we have started the program off to a great start by having a winning record in the first season.”

Anikin Harris, junior offensive line man and linebacker, said playing at BU was a second chance to play football.

“I played at Union College before coming here, but being here has been extremely fun. I am used to being a little guy, and coming out here with everyone the same size, it's been a real experience,” he said.

With a winning first season, some are looking to more successful years ahead.

Di’Maurye Ewing, sophomore running back and linebacker, said, “I hope we can win a championship next season and finish how we started this year.”

T.J. Willer said: “Having some new players added to the team will help us out next year. We have great chemistry and it will only get better over time.”

Harris said two new teams, Oakland City University and Walsh University, are joining the Midwest Sprint Football League and the Knights will play two more games next season.

Davis said he hopes to retain as many players as possible and recruit new team members for next year.

“We hope to bring in another class of around 30 to 40 people to have more depth in our roster,” he said.
