The Knights made history at the first sprint football home game with a 14-6 win against Fontbonne University. Even with Bellarmine’s home games being held off campus at St. Xavier High School, students, alumni and fans still packed the stands in support of the Knights.
Before the game, fans met in the parking lot for a tailgate. Music, corn hole and food added to the festivities of the first home game. “It was great, just a lot of energy at all times,” Bellarmine senior Alyssa Jones said. “It was very energetic, very fun and definitely a game that couldn’t be missed.”
Sophomore Grace Banta said she is excited to support the Knights’ new football team. “I was bummed when I found out they didn’t have one my freshman year,” Banta said. “I’m glad that we are getting one, and I’m excited to see how it grows throughout my time at Bellarmine.”
Lineman Cameron Broussard said the game was very energetic and lively, which added to the atmosphere. “The first home game was great. It was awesome having all the fans out here cheering us on,” he said.
Because Bellarmine’s team is brand new, it has fewer players in comparison to its opponents.
Special teams player Anthony Steimer said, "With only 30 guys, we have to be in the best condition out there. We just played a team with 60 guys,” Steimer said. “All of the guys worked our butts off day in and day out.”
Several alumni filled the stands to cheer on the team. Peter Kremer, a 2002 graduate and assistant vice president of development at BU, said he wished Bellarmine had a football team when he was a student. “I think it really adds to the experience, and it would have been a lot of fun to have a football team on campus,” Kremer said.
The Knights play their next home game on Oct. 15 at 1 p.m. against Saint Mary-Of-The-Woods College.
