Bellarmine Student Government Association held a budget meeting on Feb. 3, with representatives considering three proposals. SGA’s remaining funds for this semester prior to this meeting were $10,000 for travel expenses and $30,000 for general expenses.
The Ariel Literary Society requested $1,000 to fund general expenses for its upcoming yearly magazine to highlight student artwork and literature. This year’s magazine will be an honorary version for the late English professor Dr. Fred Smock. The Ariel Literary Society will order 200 copies of the magazine, and SGA agreed unanimously to fund the request.
“SGA is great for smaller organizations like us. With SGA’s funding, we’re able to highlight so many more students’ works and give them their first chance at being published in a magazine,” Ariel Literary Society President Ariana Alvarado said.

The Office of Identity and Inclusion asked for $9,000 to fund travel expenses to send 48 students to Atlanta in March. This trip is a cultural excursion where students will visit the Human Rights Museum and Historically Black Colleges and Universities. This trip is for students to be educated and more informed on African American culture. SGA agreed unanimously to fund this request.
The Honors Program requested $6,800 to fund travel expenses to a regional conference. The Honors Program will send 25 students to the 2023 Southern Regional Conference in Charlotte, North Carolina, from March 30 to April 1. SGA agreed unanimously to fund this request.
“This is a great opportunity for the students to get real experience presenting in front of a crowd other than Bellarmine. These presentations count towards a requirement for the honors graduation,” Honors Program Director Dr. Jon Blandford said.
The Student Government Association discusses each proposal and allocates money while maintaining enough funds to cover other expenses throughout the semester.
Senior SGA Representative Jon Gaudin said: “It is very important that SGA is able to fund these student activities. These bills today were awesome and are directly helping organizations. These three organizations don’t get much funding, so any way SGA can help out is a plus.”
