Richard Darshwood shocks students with his magical tricks

By: Lizzy Coons

Richard Darshwood showcased his skills in magic and hypnosis at Cralle Theater on Feb. 3 in celebration of homecoming week.

He travels all over the world performing amazing tricks and is well-known around the Louisville area.

“I perform all over the place. I have been as far as India, Europe, Las Vegas, and so much more. I don't necessarily go on tours, but basically if someone in some state decides they want to bring me out, I will go,” Darshwood said.

Before Darshwood started his big act, he got the opportunity to speak with a group of students and give a quick “pre show” to get them in the spirit of magic.

First-year student Katelyn Carter talked with Darshwood and saw some up-close magic.

“Before the show he was doing tricks, and I got the opportunity to do one. I thought I was going to win $23, but I lost and just got a card, but he signed it, so that was awesome,” Carter said.

There was a lot of audience interaction throughout the show, which gave students the chance to go on stage and be part of the performance.

One of the lucky audience members to go on stage was first-year student Logan Boyd. He was a part of the fan-favorite trick of the night.

“The magician asks if anyone has some small change, and I did, so I handed him the one dollar bill I had. One thing leads to another, he rips up my dollar bill, I don't know if he actually did, but he put it back together and not in the right way,” Boyd said.

Everyone was confused at this point, and Darshwood made jokes about how the dollar is put together the wrong way. He handed Boyd a paper that said he owed him a dollar, but as he was doing this, Darshwood said he may never see Boyd again.

“As I am coming to terms I am never getting that dollar back, he pulls out a lemon from the previous trick, cuts it in half, gives me one side, and boom, it’s my dollar. You may ask ‘How do you know it’s the same dollar?’ Well, he had me write down the numbers that were on my dollar bill, and they matched up,” Boyd said.

The audience members were in complete shock. These reactions are a big reason why Darshwood said he has a passion for what he does.

“I love doing exactly what I did tonight, which is helping people understand the power and limitless capabilities of their imagination. Everything starts with imagination, and I just want people to understand it is a very powerful tool they have with them at all times,” Darshwood said.
