First craft seltzer bar in Louisville now open

The Local Seltzery is open in Nulu and offers a variety of low-calorie, craft seltzers and a unique and inviting experience.

Unlike other bars that serve seltzers in cans, The Local Seltzery is the only bar providing craft seltzers in Louisville. A seltzer is an alcoholic drink that mixes alcohol with flavored carbonated water. The idea of craft seltzers had been foreign to Louisville until this bar opened its doors on Nov. 19, 2021, making it the first in Kentucky and only the fourth in the United States.

“(The Local Seltzery) offers something you really can't get anywhere,” Tyler Sparkman, a manager at the Local Seltzery said. “You can’t go somewhere and get (a seltzer) on a draft. You can't get it somewhere where somebody has actually crafted it themselves.”

The Local Seltzery’s process of making a seltzer is what sets it apart from generic seltzer brands. Sparkman said that most seltzers start out as a malt base, which means it is brewed as a beer that turns into a seltzer, causing a weird aftertaste and a potential upset stomach. The Local Seltzery, however, has found a way to blend the drink with premium vodka, which allows for a cleaner taste and lower-calorie seltzer.

“By using all-natural, clean ingredients, we serve flavorful, refreshing drinks with a fraction of the carbs and calories of traditional cocktails and beers,” The Local Seltzery’s website said. “The Local Seltzery is obsessed with providing the cleanest, most creative and refreshing beverages on the market.”

The bar also offers a variety of seasonal flavors including Kiss a ginger (Cranberry Ginger), Orange I spicy (Spiced Orange), Sh*t is bananas (Banana Foster), and Apple of my pie (Apple Cinnamon). The top-selling flavors are cranberry ginger, spicy cucumber and mango.

“I took one sip of the pineapple, and it was delicious,” Chelsea Mcmanaway, a customer at The Local Seltzery said. Mcmanaway said she thought she was expecting to drink a highly carbonated Truly but instead she drank something that was light and refreshing. “I want to go back in the summertime because it’s going to be awesome,” she said.

Although it is the only craft seltzer bar in Louisville, The Local Sletzery does not serve only seltzers. It also serves cocktail seltzers, non-alcoholic seltzers, rotating draft beers, gourmet popcorn from Froggy’s Popcorn and charcuterie boxes from Cultured - Cheese and Charcuterie Bar.

In the heart of Nulu, The Local Seltzery is surrounded by many restaurants and encourages its customers to bring food in from other restaurants to enjoy while drinking their seltzers.

“We’re going to let people know that they can order take out or get (food) delivered and they can sit here and drink our seltzers and eat food from other places since we don’t offer it,” Sparkman said.

Students can bring their IDs on Thursdays and purchase $5 flights. The Local Seltzery is open Mondays and Wednesdays from 4 to 9 p.m., Thursdays from 3 to 10 p.m., Fridays from 3 p.m. to 1 a.m., Saturdays from noon to 1 a.m., Sundays from 1 to 6 p.m.
