Davenport Announces Scholarship

Just after Atlantic-Sun conference championship on March 8, head coach Scott Davenport announced The Davenport Family Scholarship. This scholarship will give the men’s team student managers funds to offset Bellarmine tuition costs.

Davenport said he wanted to recognize these students hard work for the program. He said: “This scholarship comes from the heart. And they (the managers) earn it. They earn it every day.”

The main funding source for the scholarship will come from the Davenport Derby Dash, which is being held for the first time on May 4. The event will include a live auction and a handicapping seminar.

ESPN’s Jay Bilas and Notre Dame men’s basketball coach Mike Brey contributed items to the auction.

Basketball manager Sheldon Christmas started working with the men’s basketball team as a freshman and is the new graduate assistant for the next two years. This scholarship does not apply to graduate assistants, but Christmas said it is a welcome addition to the program.

Christmas said: “This is an opportunity for us (managers) that nobody could have imagined. It goes to show the greatness of this program.”

Senior guard Garrett Tipton said he was happy for managers to earn this scholarship. “They are truly valuable members of our team and their hard work is now going to be recognized,” he said.

The fund is accepting donations through the Bellarmine University Office of Development, Alumni Relations and Special Events at (502)272-8320.
