BUKnighted, Bellarmine Activities Council host handmade Art and Crafts Fair

Students looking for the opportunity to make some extra cash for themselves and showcase their artistic talents had to look no further than the Arts and Crafts Fair on March 15.

Tyler Davis, a senior biology pre-med major who set up a booth at the fair, said it is important to be aware of local artists.

“I run an organization called BU Showcase. We are one of the only creative arts organizations at Bellarmine,” Davis said. “One of my goals with Bellarmine and with my program is to try to not only get the creative arts out there in the BU community but also in the Louisville community.”

The Arts and Crafts Fair offered the opportunity for students and community members to come together over the mutual appreciation of art while also supporting RSOs.

Everything from bracelets and earrings to paintings and stuffed animals could be found at the fair, which was co-sponsored by BUKnighted and the Bellarmine Activities Council.

All items were handmade and priced under $30. The public event drew a large crowd, which allowed participating students and RSOs to make more money. By the end of the night, participating student organizations had raised more than $400.

May Willcox, a senior double majoring in psychology and communications who also serves as the PR chair for BUKnighted, said opening the event to the public allowed community members to enjoy the students' talents.

“People can come see what Bellarmine students are making because some of these people are ridiculously talented at what they do,” Willcox said.

BUKnighted is Bellarmine’s LGBTQ+ identity group whose focus is helping to develop, support and connect the LGBTQ+ community on campus. The Art and Crafts Fair allowed an opportunity for those who may not be as outspoken as others to play a vital role in raising money for BUKnighted.

“My friends and I are all part of BUKnighted’s board, and we really wanted to do something to help. I usually do things like cross-stitch in my free time” Willcox said, “So I thought it would be a good opportunity to raise money doing something I like.”

BUKnighted President Lily Miller said it is a struggle to get funding for student organizations. “I wanted an opportunity to raise money because budgets were pretty crazy with RSOs this year,” Miller said. “I love to craft. My friends all love to craft. I guess it's the big thing in BUKnighted and a way to raise funds for our organization.”

Participating artists kept 100% of the funds and any tips and could keep all or part of the money or donate their proceeds to their RSO.
