BU students take on healthcare majors

By Alyssa Brock

A new generation of healthcare workers have begun to prepare for the challenges of working in the medical field.

Kate Radeke, junior nursing student said, “I chose nursing as a career because I always loved science growing up, and I learned about the many opportunities it has my first year.”

However, many college students do not know what they want to study.

Cayden Hambrick, a senior radiation therapy student, said: “I picked radiation therapy because I knew that I wanted to do something in the healthcare field and was unsure what I wanted to do. I was able to go to a career fair in high school, and I found out about radiation therapy.”

Others, like senior exercise science major Ashlee Harris, have always been interested in physical therapy. Harris said, “Since I was little, I liked the human body and how we are able to move.”

Positions in healthcare can bring many challenges and require the right preparation.

Radeke said she has prepared herself for the emotional challenges of a nursing career.

“Being a radiation therapist can be a really difficult job dealing with patients who could be very sick, and you have to have a strong mindset, a big heart, and I feel like that is something I am passionate about,” Hambrick said.

For Harris, many of her challenges have been outside the classroom.

“I was injured last year with an ACL injury and recently tore my achilles and have been out for two years playing basketball for Bellarmine,” Harris said.

Students who are interested in healthcare majors in Bellarmine’s College of Health Professions can find more information at College of Health Professions (bellarmine.edu).
