Made for students by students, the Biology Club hosted its first bake sale Tuesday in the Quad, to raise funds for the Kentucky Human Society. Selling all sorts of baked goods and treats, the main goal for the club was to give back to an organization that many of the club’s members care about. The club raised $82.
Biology Club member and senior Kate Moran came up with the idea for the sale, wanting to give back to the community that brought her and her rescue pets together.
“I just wanted to give something back to support them for everything that they do,” she said.
The club decided to go with a bake sale because baked goods are affordable, are easy to carry around and offered a way to give volunteer hour opportunities to those involved.
Junior Gracie Osborne said: “Baked goods are just simple and easy. It’s great for a college student to make.”
The club made sure to indicate what allergens were in the baked goods for the safety of students and staff.
“We wrote the ingredients as a way to make sure that we don’t give food to people that may be allergic to it. For example, the brownies have egg, wheat, and milk,” Osborne said.
Junior Madelyn Sheldon was among the first customers at the sale.
“I really like animals and cookies, so I think it’s a good sale,” she said.
For those who weren’t in the mood for a treat, the club also sold goodies for their furry friends.
“We also decided to sell Milk Bones just as another way to raise more funds in case someone wasn’t in the mood for sweets,” Osborne said.
Moran will graduate this year but said she hopes that people will continue to support the Kentucky Human Society through this bake sale in the future.
“I’m sad that I won’t get to be a part of it next year, but I’m glad I was able to participate,” said Moran.
