BraveBU marches for survivors

BraveBU hosted an event called ‘Take Back the Night’ on Thursday to honor sexual violence survivors. Everyone marched in silence from the Quad up to the Siena Complex.

While waiting for the march to start, participants could make posters to show their support and talk to other people who were there.

Sophomore Isabella Christopher said she thought this event was a perfect time for the Bellarmine community to come together.

“I decided to come out to support my community and just involve myself in a cause that is close to home. I think events like this help bring us all together and make our community even stronger,” Christopher said.

Once students arrived at the Siena complex they were handed a teal-colored ribbon and different color strings to represent sexual abuse.

Sophomore Rebecca Dylan is a member of BraveBU and helped organize the event.

“I think this event in particular is a great way to spread awareness. This event that we host is actually a national event, so a lot of chapters and universities can host it themselves. It is a really good way for students to get involved on campus while also coming together to support one another,” Dylan said.

First-year student Sam Mitchell was one of the community partners who spoke at the event.

“.. because at the rates that sexual violence occurs tells us that it is a cultural problem, but don't see these types of numbers unless a problem is deeply rooted. All of us know survivors whether we realize it or not, many men are survivors as well,” Mitchell said.

After the community partners spoke and victims stories were told, there was a 30-minute yoga session for people to seek relief.

Danielle White, the new sexual assault prevention coordinator at Bellarmine, also spoke at the event.

“I have been so impressed with the students. A lot of times when faced with topics such as sexual assault, dating violence, stalking, the impulse is to turn a blind eye and to assume that someone else will do something about it,” White said.
