By: Kimberly Alonzo

Bellarmine University has recently experienced automobile break-ins, particularly involving Kia and Hyundai cars from model years 2011 to 2022.

"In light of recent events, we are stepping up our surveillance efforts within parking facilities," Deborah Fox, director of Public Safety, said. "It's super important to remember if you see something, say something."

There were three break-ins reported in February,  compared to no break-ins in February 2023. The recent break-ins occurred behind Knights Hall and next to the SuRF.

Student Hadley Harlow said she was confident Public Safety would keep the community safe.  "I'm not overly concerned about the recent break-ins because I trust in our campus safety officers. They have always done a great job keeping our campus safe," she said.

Public Safety officer Ayorinde Ashiru said his Kia Soul was broken into on Norris Place. He said Kia has contacted him regarding this matter, indicating that "the techincal issue will be getting fixed.”

Public Safety advises students to :

  • Always lock your car doors and close windows when leaving your vehicle.

  • Park in well-lit areas with surveillance or frequent foot traffic.

  • Keep valuables hidden or store them in the trunk.

  • Use anti-theft devices like steering wheel locks or car alarms.

  • Report suspicious activity to the public safety office promptly.
