Bellarmine softball wins on the road

By: Lizzy Coons

The Bellarmine softball team traveled to Tennessee Tech University on Wednesday and won 8-3 in seven innings.

The Knights were down by two for four innings until they had a breakthrough in the fourth inning, adding two runs and tying the game 3-3. The bats continued to stay alive, and Bellarmine added another four runs in the fifth inning.

Senior Olivia Bricker was hot at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a walk.

“The game was really fun, and it was good to get a win in the books. I was calm at the plate, just really relaxed, and I was seeing the ball in my zone driving it the opposite way,” Bricker said.

She said she is excited to see the momentum coming off this game carry the Knights into the weekend series against Queens University of Charlotte.

Emily O’Dee was another player having a great day at the plate. She was also 2-for-4 on the day.

“My approach today was to just stay calm and hit the pitch that the pitcher was going to give me. They weren't throwing many strikes so I was really trying to look for my pitch and drive it when I was given the chance,” O’Dee said.

O’Dee said she is happy with the way her team came together and was able to get a much- needed victory.

“We fought till the end. We were down at the beginning but we never stopped fighting. I think our team needed it so overall it was just a good day,” O’dee said.

The Knights had eight hits overall compared to Tennessee Tech's six.

Bellarmine head coach Caitlyn de la Haba said it was a great team effort and the team came together when they needed to the most.

“I thought that our pitchers did a great job and our bats came alive at just the right time. We had great situational hitting, which we have been working on a lot so I was really proud of them for that,” Haba said.

She said she hopes her team will gain confidence from this victory.

“I think just gaining momentum, I definitely feel hitting-wise being able to put up a bunch of runs is a really big positive for us and getting those situational hitting moments like I said is really important for us moving forward,” Haba said.

The Knights will take on Queens University of Charlotte on April 1 and 2 at home in a three-game series. For more information on the Knights’ schedule, visit https://athletics.bellarmine.edu/sports/softball/schedule.
