A blizzard of talent: breaking down Reneé Rapp’s debut album “Snow Angel”

By: Emily Riddle

Who is Reneé Rapp?

Reneé Rapp was born in Huntersville, North Carolina, on Jan. 10, 2000. From the start, Rapp had a vision to be a pop star. She knew college wasn’t for her, so she entered the Jimmy Awards in New York City, earning the award of “Best Performance by an Actress.” This led her to Broadway, where she was offered a spot as Regina George in “Mean Girls: The Musical.” She accepted the role with the condition that the executives would find a way to get her a record deal. Since then, Rapp also starred in “The Sex Lives of College Girls” and “Mean Girls (2024).” She released her debut EP “Everything to Everyone” on Nov. 14, 2022. Her debut album “Snow Angel” was released on Aug. 18, 2023, with the deluxe version released on Nov. 17, 2023.

Rapp is also famous for saying whatever is on her mind. Numerous TikToks of her saying shocking things have gone viral. It became a joke that she lacked media training and Gen Z has fallen in love with her for that.

What is “Snow Angel”?

The whole album encapsulated Rapp as a 22-year-old. Songs range from her fears of growing up with “23” to her toxic relationship with “I Hate Boston” to her struggling with her sexuality with “Pretty Girls.”

Rating

5/5

3 Reasons “Snow Angel” is 5 Stars

  1. Versatility This album has a song for every mood. Feeling angry? Play “Poison Poison.” Fear? “23” is your go-to. Want to dance? “Talk Too Much” and “Pretty Girls” are the songs for you. I feel the whole rollercoaster of emotions she was feeling when I listen to the album. I love when an album isn’t one thing, I need an artist who can show that they are not just one type of artist.

  2. Personality Rapp shows her personality through this album. The bridge of “Talk Too Much” is a stream of consciousness that lets us peek into her mind. “So What Now” and “Poison Poison” have outros to them that show her silliness. It keeps the music more relatable.

  3. Vocals I have never heard a voice like Rapp’s. I don’t even know how to explain it. The range she has is unfathomable to me. I think everyone needs to listen to her music to understand how talented she is. She makes it seem so effortless, too. She can belt out the most beautiful note like it’s nothing.

Favorite Lyrics

  • “I didn't wanna have to use the knife behind your back to go and flip the script” - “Poison Poison”

  • “It's not its fault, just a casualty/And casual's the way you chose to leave” - “I Hate Boston”

  • “Three hundred sixty-five days later, I still haven't learned to calm down/But I blow candles out/My wish should be different by now” - “23”

What Others Think

“I really like Reneé Rapp. She does a phenomenal job performing and has insane vocals. My friend and I actually saw her in concert back in October, and it was amazing. It was my first ever concert, and I can’t believe I was in her presence.” (Taylor Slone, Bellarmine University psychology major, in-person interview)

“The album helped me make sense of some of my feelings. It makes me feel like I’m not the only one feeling that way. They make me feel less crazy.” (Zoe Gonzalez, Gaston College veterinary medical technology major, FaceTime interview)

“‘Snow Angel Deluxe’ has got to be one of my favorite albums that's come out by far. It has so many good songs and a good feature by Coco Jones, and it just always gets me in a good mood. I can also relate to some of the more touching songs about family and growing up and all that kind of stuff.” (Pieper Davis, Bellarmine University communication major, in-person interview)
